A Letter About Mr. Ling Liu

Dear Friends,

We are writing on behalf of Mr. Ling Liu's surviving family to ask for your generous donations.  Ling passed away accidentally on May 24th while traveling in China. He was only 47..

It is such a tragic loss to his beloved family and to all his dear friends! We are all still in shock and disbelief. What makes this tragedy even more sad is that he was on an abrupt one-week trip to attend his elder brother's funeral, who passed away a week earlier. He did not come back as expected to rejoin his family in the US on May 26th. Instead, his wife, Youping, had to get on a flight on May 28th to attend his own funeral there!

Ling's family is not only experiencing deep emotional pain but also facing financial difficulties. Ling has been the sole bread winner for the family and did not purchase any life insurance.  His wife has been a stay home mom since she lost her job in the last economic downturn in 2003. Their three kids Eileen, Vincent, and Amy, who are of ages 17, 15, and 11 respectively, are left without a caring dad and have their once promising futures in doubt.

You cannot imagine the financial pressures that have fallen on the shoulders of Ling's wife. She may try to find a job but she has not been in the job market for so long that with today's unemployment rate, it will be extremely hard. With Ling gone, the family will lose their health care coverage by the end of this month. The house mortgage still needs to be paid monthly. Their oldest child, Eileen, will be applying for college next fall and Vincent will be the next in three years.

Ling Liu has been a very responsible family man. His parents moved in with them in 1997. His mom passed away 6 years ago and was buried in Virginia. His poor dad is nearly 90 years old and is still waiting for his son to return home. The family is struggling to find a moment to let him know. They are afraid that he may not be able to stand the shock.

Ling Liu was originally from FuZhou, China. He graduated in 1986 from the University of Science & Technology of China (USTC, 中国科技大学), majoring in Modern Physics, and then attended Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Research under Chinese Academy of Sciences for his Masters Degree in Physics. He came to US in the Summer of 1991 on a student visa to attend Catholic University, and later transferred to George Mason University in Virginia where he was awarded an MS in Computer Science in 1996. He has been working in IT field since then.
