Quintessential USTCers
USTC Alumni Foundation conducts alumni interviews for all of
us to exchange ideas on how to build USTC into a world-class institution,
and to help ourselves excel at our chosen professions. As such,
USTCAF doesn't necessarily endorse all statements made during
the interviews.

Interview with
Dr. Zhan Hongbin (December 1999)
- Hongbin Zhan graduated from
the Physics Department of USTC in 1989. He received his
MS in physics in 1993 and Ph.D. in hydrology and
hydrogeology in 1996 from University of Nevada, Reno
(UNR). Since 1996 he has been an assistant professor at
the Geology and Geophysics Department of Texas A&M
University.

- Prof. Deng (605) has been
studying and teaching in USTC since 1960. He has served
as the Dean of Admissions and Placement Office of USTC
since 1990. Besides his administrative duties, Professor
Deng also teaches in Department of Mechanics and the
Business School.

- Dr. Li is a co-founder of
Westport Financial LLC. He is the Chairman and Co-CEO
of the firm. Westport has recently launched a new-wave

- Prof. Chi-Wang Shu is
the Chairman of the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown
University. He is the first among mainland
Chinese students coming to US after the cultural
revolution to serve as chairman in one of the top
mathematics departments.

- Dr. Wen is an Associate
Professor in MIT. He received his Ph.D from Princeton
University in 1987. Dr. Wen was a recipient of the OCPA
(Overseas Chinese Physics Association) Outstanding Young
Researcher Award in 1994 and the A.P. Sloan fellowship
from 1992 to 1997.

Call for Interviews
USTC Alumni Foundation is currently interviewing
one alum approximately every month. The interview scripts are
published in the monthly communications newsletter that
USTC AF sends out to the USTC alumni community and also
here at AF's home on the web.
There are three objectives for the interviews: (i) spread
success stories among our alumni to help them build their
careers; (ii) provide a stage for alumni to share ideas
about building an even better USTC; and (iii) give the
newsletter a personal touch and help old friends stay
in touch.
Most alumni contacted about the interviews generously
shared their ideas. Remember,
without your help, there will be no interviews. If there
is any way we can do this better, please let us (afgb-AT-ustcaf.org) know.
